Gambling is the wagering of money or something of value on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning money and/or material goods.
The word “gambling” derives from a Sanskrit word meaning “to play”. Gambling can also refer to a person who engages in gambling as a profession. Gambling is widespread throughout the world, with gamblers being present in all societies and cultures.
Gambling can be understood as a game of chance, where participants gamble against each other for money or for stakes such as possession of property; but where the outcome may affect only the participants’ own wealth, for example in lotteries and raffles.
Gambling can also extend to non-financial forms: for example, people gambled on whether America would enter
